Putting an end to phishing? Passkeys, Wallets, and well-meaning politicians.
Beskrivelse
After ten years of eID in the EU, a new revision of the eIDAS regulation, referred to as eIDAS 2, is ready. One key goal is to have all member states adopt and actually use eID, such as the Danish MitID and Swedish BankID. Another more consequential goal is to introduce personal digital wallets for identity and other credentials. The eIDAS regulation and most technology firms are very prescriptive on using cryptography, including the particular types of hardware to use. At the same time, phishing seems to be - by far - the most prevalent and costly attack vector. However, there are no regulatory requirements to curb phishing. I will explore how new technologies like passkeys and wallets may help stop phishing. Communicated and used correctly, these initiatives may finally dampen politicians’ thirst for ever-stronger, ever more costly cryptographic hardware.
