In TNW: A propaganda network linked to Russia has sparked alarm about a new weapon of information warfare: large language models (LLMs). CopyCop tailored the content to specific audiences and political biases using prompt engineering. Delivered via inauthentic US, UK, and French news sites, the articles covered divisive domestic and international issues.

Via Infosecurity Magazine: "Security researchers [at Recorded Future] have discovered a major new Russian disinformation campaign using generative AI (#GenAI) to 'plagiarize and weaponize' content from major news organizations in a bid to influence Western voters. Media organizations including Al-Jazeera, Fox News, the BBC, La Croix and TV5Monde are among those impacted."

In interview, LockBItSupp says authorities outed the wrong guy. Why it matters: 1. The leader of the LockBit ransomware gang, LockBitSupp, denies the accusation he is Russian national, Dmitry Khoroshev. This raises questions about the accuracy of law enforcement's efforts to unmask cybercriminals in increasingly complex cybercrime cases. 2. Despite enforcing penalties and offering a significant reward for his arrest, international law enforcement's recent focus on LockBit has only seemed to motivate the group, pointing to the persistent nature of cybercrime. 3. Despite the February seizure of LockBit's infrastructure, the group still appears to be operational, potentially indicating the difficulty of dismantling these international cyber criminal networks. According to LockBitSupp, even if a member is arrested, the group's operations wouldn't necessarily be impacted. Learn more by visiting The Record from Recorded Future News: https://lnkd.in/e3nkFg6p

Insikt Group has identified a network named CopyCop that uses AI to manipulate content from legitimate media for political purposes—operated likely from Russia and possibly backed by the Russian government, CopyCop crafts and disseminates politically biased content using inauthentic media outlets in the US, UK, and France. The network modifies genuine articles to promote narratives favorable to Russian interests while criticizing Western actions, particularly regarding the Ukraine conflict and Israel-Hamas tensions. This manipulation aims to influence public opinion and sow discord: https://bit.ly/3QDAwbV
